Three killed in gunfight in Manipur’s Ukhrul in clash over cleaning land

Three people, including a Manipur Rilfes personnel, were killed in a gunfight which broke out in Manipur’s Ukhrul over cleaning a plot of land as part of the Swachhata Abhiyan on Wednesday, a police officer said.
Prohibitory orders were imposed, and mobile internet services were suspended in Ukhrul for one day after the clash between residents of Hunphun and Hungpung villages in Ukhrul. The clash, which left several people injured as well, was sparked by a longstanding land dispute.
The victims were identified as Rifleman Worinmi Thumbra of 6th Manipur Rifles, Reileiwung Hongray and Silas Zingkhai.
Sub-divisional magistrate of Ukhrul D Kamei said that there was a possibility of law and order problem between the two villages, which may lead to “breach of peace and public tranquility” between both villages.
“Such disturbances may result in serious breach of peace and danger to human lives and properties,” the magistrate said in the order, adding that movement of people outside their homes and other activities that could disturb the law and order situation in the district were restricted till further order.
Kamei has also written to Deputy Inspector General of the 10 Sector Assam Rifles to requisition the services of armed forces in Ukhrul district with immediate effect to provide assistance to the civil administration in maintaining law and order.
